Putin decorates Serb WW2 veterans

BELGRADE -- Serbia's WW2 veterans have been decorated with the jubilee medals of the Russian Federation on the occasion of 70 years of victory over fascism.

The medals have been presented by Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Chepurin in the name of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday, April 29, the Day of War Veterans, released a message in which he voices gratitude for the veterans' sacrifice for the country.

The Day of War Veterans was celebrated on Tuesday, at the headquarters of the Ministry of National Defence (MApN), in the presence of Defence Minister Mircea Dusa in a show featuring folk songs performed by well-known artists of the genre, such as Veta Biris, Gheorghe Rosoga, Sava Negrean Brudascu.

The Ministry of National Defence (MApN) is organizing this year in all the large garrisons in the country special manifestations dedicated to the Year of War Veterans, 70 years after the end of the Second World War, MApN informs.

Visiting French Secretary of state for War Veterans and Memory, Jean-Marc Todeschini said on Thursday night that it is important for the young to know their history, thus being capable to make their own opinion upon the events, and voiced appreciation for the Romanian Government's initiative to declare 2015 the "Year of the War Veterans."

The Croatian government met one of the demands of ex-soldiers from the 1991-95 war who have been protesting for two months outside the veterans’ ministry in Zagreb.

Some 3,000 former soldiers marched through the centre of Zagreb, demanding that the government take action after the suicides of numerous 1990s war veterans.

The issue of veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder was raised again this week when Macedonian police detained a 40-year-old veteran from the southern town of Kavadarci on Tuesday on suspicion of killing his wife's sister and both her parents in their family home.
