Migrant Surge Complicates Romania's Schengen Plans

A surge in migrants crossing Romania towards Western Europe, and the increasing number of migrant and refugees being detained on the country's border, may delay Bucharest's plans to join the passport-free Schengen area.

EU justice and interior ministers agreed on Friday to allow Bulgaria and Romania to consult, in read-only mode, the Visa Information System data.

Ending free movement in the Schengen zone would be fatal to Europe, European Commissioner for Internal Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos warned on Friday.

"We share the concerns of some member states for security, but Schengen is alive and should remain alive, because if Schengen dies, Europe will die," Avramopoulos told reporters at a meeting of EU interior ministers in Luxembourg.

The European Parliament voted for "access" of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen visa information system. This will allow both countries to check through the new visa system for third-country nationals without, however, being able to enter, modify or delete data, reported BGNES.

Avramopoulos: Free-travel zone must be protected

One day after the European Commission proposed that temporary border controls inside the European Union's free-travel zone be extended for up to three years during a crisis, EU Commissioner for Migration and Home Affairs Dimitris Avramopoulos said that the Schengen area, where passport checks are normally not required, must be protected at all costs.
