Russian President Vladimir Putin has made a formal legislative step toward annexing Crimea.
Putin has informed Russia's Parliament that Ukraine's autonomous region of Crimea, which approved with a 97% majority to secede from the country on a referendum held on Sunday, wishes to be incorporated into the Russian Federation, the BBC reports.
A Russian state TV anchor described Russia as the only country capable of turning the United States into "radioactive ash", Sunday.
CPJ condemns blocking of news websites in Russia
NEW YORK -- The Committee to Protect Journalists is alarmed by the blocking today of independent and pro-opposition news websites in Russia.
Those include Ezhednevny Zhurnal, Grani, Kasparov, and the website of the liberal radio station Ekho Moskvy, said a statement.
Ukraine's officials accused Russia of conducting a large military build-up near the country's border that raises the threat of an invasion.
Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council Andriy Parubiy warned that he has "every reason to believe" that Russian forces along Ukraine's southern and eastern borders will invade, KyivPost reports.
