EU, Russia play up ties but trade barbs over Syria

EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on July 11 said both sides could cooperate on key international issues but traded barbs over Syria at the same time.

Mogherini, hosting Lavrov in Brussels after visiting Moscow in April, said they regularly discussed global problems affecting their interests.

We should consider ourselves lucky. Imagine if Greece were not a member of the European Union and the eurozone, if it didn't have institutions and justice officials who respect their role. At best, the country would be run as it was in the cursed 80s, when a minister could force approval of a loan or appoint his gardener to head a bank with a simple phone call.

President Erdoğan, Trump hold surprise meeting at G-20

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and U.S. President Donald Trump held an unscheduled meeting on July 8 as a part of the G-20 summit in Hamburg. The two leaders held a nearly half hour meeting before the closing session of the G20 summit, Turkish officials have said without giving more details.  

Erdoğan, Putin meet at G-20 summit in Hamburg

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met on July 8 on the sidelines of the G-20 Hamburg Summit in Germany.  

The two leaders discussed bilateral cooperation, the Syrian crisis, the Turkish Stream natural gas pipeline project and Akkuyu nuclear power plant, the Kremlin said in a statement.  

Putin says he thinks US 'more pragmatic' on Syria

Russian President Vladimir Putin said on July 8 that he believes the United States has become "more pragmatic" about the Syrian civil war.

"It seems to me that the US position (on Syria) has become more pragmatic. There is a comprehension that if we combine our efforts, we can achieve a lot," Putin said in Germany, a day after his first meeting with Trump at the G20.
