Russia accused of "pouring gasoline on fire” in Syria

U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter has described Russian airstrikes and the Kremlin's approach to the civil war in Syria as "pouring gasoline on the fire.”

An article in the British daily Guardian said that the statement "pierced the veneer of cooperation that Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin had sought to establish at the UN this week."

Putin and Obama meet in New York

Presidents of the U.S. and Russia, Barack Obama and Vladimir Putin, have met behind closed doors on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, agencies reported.

This was the first official meeting between Putin and Obama in the last two years and although it was planned to last 55 minutes, the two presidents talked for more than an hour and a half.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Barack Obama held constructive and frank talks during a meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York on Monday.

This constituted their first face-to-face meeting in nearly a year, the two presidents having last met at the APEC summit in China in November 2014.
