Giannis Houvardas gives the Greek National Opera's production of Leos Janacek's "The Makropulos Affair" a sci-fi thriller twist. This is the tale of Elina, who was destined to live for eternity under different names because her father, an alchemist, tested a youth elixir on her in the 16th century. Finally, as Emilia Marty in Prague in 1922, she decides to take her fate into her own hands.

Homage to Ney Matogrosso | Athens | To May 25

The Brazilian Embassy's Casa do Brasil cultural center presents "Ney Matogrosso - A Primordial Revolutionary," an exhibition of paintings by Greek artist Alkistis Michaelidou inspired by the Brazilian singer. The singer himself, an icon of contemporary Brazilian culture, will be present at the opening on Wednesday, April 18, at 7 p.m. The center is open Mondays to Fridays 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

'Luisa Miller' from the Met | Athens & Thessaloniki | April 14

The Athens and Thessaloniki concert halls are screening, live from the Metropolitan Opera, a revival of Giuseppe Verdi's "Luisa Miller," which has not been seen at the Met since 2006. The production is conducted by Bertrand de Billy and stars Sonya Yoncheva in the title role and Piotr Beczala as Rodolfo in the tale of the young woman who sacrifices her own happiness to save her father's life.

Greek town ritually burns effigy of Judas as Orthodox celebrate Easter

As Orthodox Christians around the world celebrated Easter on Sunday, a town on Greece's Peloponnese peninsula observed the holy day by burning an effigy of Judas at sea.

The ritual burning of Judas is a custom also observed by Roman Catholics in parts of Latin America as a symbolic punishment for Judas' betrayal of Christ for a monetary reward.

International Forum "Opera Europe" - 22 - 24 March 2018

The Sofia Opera hosts an International Opera Europe forum from March 22nd to March 24th. The Forum will gather in the opera 87 directors and various representatives of major opera theaters from Europe, America and Canada.
