The case for rules

The Athens Stocks Exchange has been traumatized by events in recent days, which have highlighted the market's volatility. 

The economy needs investments, especially from abroad, and as it prepares to rely on its own strengths the stock market must be reliable.

And to become reliable, strict rules are needed, as well as transparency if we are to avoid the pitfalls of the past.

Exposed to external risk

As the last couple of days have made evident, Greece's return to international markets will not be a smooth ride, and let's not even get started on talk of a so-called "clean exit" from the bailout programs.

ATHEX: Bourse recovers from morning losses to notch up some moderate gains

The Athens stock market had a day of high volatility on Tuesday on various rumors about the outcome of the all-important talks between the government and the country's creditors, with the benchmark eventually managing to inch up just shy of 600 points, having seen prices drop considerably earlier in the day.

China stocks slump 7 pct on opening day of 2016, trading halted for first time

Chinese stock markets tumbled 7 percent in their opening session  of 2016 on Jan. 4 as weak factory activity surveys and falls in the yuan added to concerns about the struggling economy, forcing exchanges to suspend trade for the first time.

Early losses quickly snowballed in the afternoon, with trading suspended around 0530 GMT, about 90 minutes before the regular close.
