Bulgarian Authorities Order Detention of Nationalist Leader Siderov

Sofia investigative officials have ordered the detention of Ataka party leader Volen Siderov, the prosecution has announced.

Siderov and Desislav Chukolov, a member of his party, arrived at the investigation office in Bulgaria's capital on Tuesday morning after being summoned at the request of the Prosecutor's office.

The two are facing hooliganism charges.

This was announced by Rumyana Arnaudova, spokesperson of Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov, in an interview for private NOVA TV station on Thursday.

Bulgarian Parliament Backs Detention of Two Nationalist Ataka MPs

The Bulgarian parliament voted on Wednesday in favour of the detention of two nationalist Ataka MPs, who are being investigated for their alleged participation in three incidents in downtown Sofia.

A total of 124 MPs voted in favour, 19 were against, while 15 abstained, daily Dnevnik informs.

Bulgarian Prosecution Accuses Two Nationalist Ataka MPs of Hooliganism

The Bulgarian Prosecutor's Office accused on Tuesday two nationalist Ataka MPs of hooliganism.

The accused MPs are the leader of Ataka, Volen Siderov, and his fellow party member Desislav Chukolov.

In the past month, the two have been involved in a series of incidents in the area of the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts (NATFIZ) in downtown Sofia.

Lawmakers are to decide Thursday whether to lift the immunity of Volen Siderov, the leader of nationalist Ataka party, and Desislav Chukolov, a member of the same party.

An ad hoc committee set up after the step was requested by Bulgaria's Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov already voted "yes" earlier this week.

Lawmakers in Bulgaria are set to discuss a demand by the country's Chief Prosecutor on the immunity of nationalist Ataka party's leader Volen Siderov and of an Ataka member and MP, Desislav Chukolov.

On Tuesday, an ad hoc committee granted Chief Prosecutor Sotir Tsatsarov's request to revoke the immunity of both lawmakers.
