European Wage Growth Slows at End of 2023: Bulgaria Outpaces EU Average

Data released by Eurostat reveals a notable deceleration in wage growth across the European Union (EU) and the eurozone during the final quarter of 2023. While the average hourly wage in the EU increased by 3.8%, representing a marked slowdown from the previous quarter, Bulgaria saw a notable rise of 11.9%, according to the latest figures.

Serbian December average net monthly wage at 95,093 dinars

BELGRADE - The Serbian average net monthly wage in December was 95,093 dinars, according to figures released by the national statistical office RZS.

The average gross wage was 130,405 dinars.

Average gross and net wages between January and December were up by 14.8 pct y-o-y in nominal terms and by 2.4 pct y-o-y in real terms.

Long and rocky road to average salary of 1,500 euros

The road to increasing the minimum wage to 950 euros and the average salary to €1,500 by 2027, as the government has pledged, is difficult and long.

According to academics and labor experts, the goal is hard to achieve even at nominal prices. As they say, after the increase in the minimum wage, the average has been set at €1,200.

Serbian November average net monthly wage at 89,956 dinars

BELGRADE - The Serbian average net monthly wage in November was 89,956 dinars, according to figures released by the national statistical office RZS.

The average gross wage was 123,971 dinars.

Average gross and net wages between January and November were up by 15.0 pct y-o-y in nominal terms and by 2.0 pct y-o-y in real terms.

The factors that will shape salaries this year

The first increase in the salaries of civil servants after 14 years, the unfreezing of the step-up period for the salaries of 100,000 private-sector workers on the minimum wage, as well as the prime minister's pledge to set the average monthly salary at 1,500 euros by 2027, are three factors that will determine the actual rate of salary growth this year.

Minimum wage hiked by 49 percent for 2024

The monthly met minimum wage will be 17,002 Turkish Liras ($578) in 2024 for millions of employees, Labor and Social Security Minister Vedat Işıkhan has announced.

The new minimum wage level is 49 percent higher compared with July, when the wage was increased in a mid-year adjustment. It marks a 100 percent hike from January last year.

Average gross and net wages between January and October were up by 15.0 pct y-o-y in nominal terms and by 1.4 pct y-o-y in real terms.
