2.1 billion Tons of Solid Waste is Generated on the Planet For a Year

Every year, 2.1 billion tons of solid waste is generated on the planet. This is enough to fill 822,000 Olympic-size pools. Of these, only 16% are recycled completely. This concludes a report by Verisk Maplecroft, quoted by bTV.

The United States leads the ranking as the most inefficient country in terms of production-recycling ratio.

Alternate minister dismisses trash crisis fears

Alternate Environment Minister Sokratis Famellos has downplayed concerns over a feared waste management crisis once the capital's main landfill in Fyli, northwestern Athens, runs out of space in under 10 months and is shut down.

"There is no danger regarding waste management... there is no infrastructure issue with regard to waste management in Attica," he said on Wednesday.

Tensions building over landfill site at Grammatiko

A showdown is in the offing between Attica Regional Governor Rena Dourou and local authorities and residents over the operation of a new landfill near the village of Grammatiko, northeast of the capital.
Dourou appears unwilling to back down, having emphasized during a session of the regional council on Thursday that the project will go ahead.

The Apartment Buildings in Sofia may have their own Recycling Bins

People living in apartment buildings in Sofia will be able to ask for separate waste collection containers to be used by them. This will be possible with the re-signing of the separate collection contracts between the Sofia Municipality and the recovery organizations Ecopack, EcoBulpack and Bulecopack.
