Weightlifter Nicolae Onica won on Saturday evening two gold medals in the men's 94 kg category (clean and jerk, total) at the European Weightlifting Championships that is taking place these days in Izvorani.

Defending world champion Loredana Toma on Thursday evening won three gold medals and Irina Lepsa won three silver medals in the women's 63 kg category (snatch, clean and jerk and total) of the European Weightlifting Championships at Izvorani.

Women weightlifters from Iran will be allowed to compete internationally for the first time, the president of the country’s weightlifting federation has said.

Turkey bids farewell to ‘pocket Hercules’ Süleymanoğlu

Thousands of people attended a funeral ceremony on Nov. 19 in Istanbul as the nation bid farewell to legendary triple Olympic gold-medal winning Turkish weightlifter Naim Süleymanoğlu, who died at the age of 50 a day earlier.

Multiple World and Olympic weightlifting champion Naim Süleymanoğlu has died at the age of 50 after having been placed into intensive care at the Ataşehir Memorial in Istanbul, Turkish media said Saturday, quoted by Daily Sabah. 

World and Olympic champion former Turkish weightlifter Naim Süleymanoğlu died on Nov. 18, at 50-years-old, after undergoing a liver transplant surgery on Oct. 6, state-run Anadolu Agency reported.

The weightlifter champion Velichko Cholakov has died suddenly, his relatives reported,quoted by BTV. 

They explained that he fell sick after 10:00 am today, that they called a team of emergency care, who found he had a heart attack. Velichko Cholakov is an honorary citizen of Smolyan.

Bulgaria's Vasil Gospodinov won a silver medal at the European Weightlifting Championships underway in Split, Croatia, according to BNR.

Gospodinov is competing in the 105kg weight class. He succeeded in lifting the total of 397 kg, enough to get him the silver. In the same weight class Armenia's Simon Martirosyan lifted the total of 414 kg and won his first-ever European title.

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has said it expects to rule by the end of next month on Bulgaria's appeal against a ban on its weightlifting team for the 2016 Olympics, Reuters reported on Wednesday.
