Bulgaria is grappling with the aftermath of heavy snowfall, mobilizing over 800 snowplows to clear roads across the country, according to the Road Agency. Highways, first-class and second-class roads, as well as mountain passes, are receiving priority attention in the ongoing snow removal efforts.

The farmers did so on the first day of protests against the government's plans to phase out agricultural subsidies.

State services expressed concern about this and called this protest the largest in post-war history. It is feared that from early morning almost no part of the state will function normally.

Bags of road salt piled up next to some winter service vehicles on the premises of the road maintenance department of the Attica Regional Authority in Kapandriti, north of the capital, during an inspection by Regional Governor Giorgos Patoulis Thursday.

An abrupt change in weather will bring cold and rain tonight. In western Bulgaria and the Pre-Balkans, the temperature drop will turn the rain to snow, said the press office of the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA).

In this regard, the Road Infrastructure Agency (RIA) is urging drivers who plan to travel through mountain passes not to take to the road with summer tyres and to adjust their speed to the weather conditions.

Approximately 700 snow removal vehicles were out clearing the roads last night. All national roads are passable in winter conditions. Around 8:30 am, restrictions on the movement of heavy goods vehicles over 12 tonnes with trailers and semi-trailers across the Preval pass were lifted, said the press office of the Road Infrastructure Agency, reports Focus News Agency. 

From today, comes into force winter maintenance of the national road network. The Road Agency urges drivers who have not changed the summer tires of their winter cars to do it as soon as possible.
