Ljajic: Serbia belongs in WTO but GMO ban is obstacle to membership

Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic said on Tuesday that Serbia belongs in the World Trade Organization (WTO).

But he was not specific about when it might join the organization, the Beta agency is reporting.

The minister told reporters that a ban on GMO trade was still in force in Serbia, which was an obstacle to WTO membership.

China's commerce ministry said on Thursday that the European Union's new trade rules against Chinese imports lacked awareness of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, urging the EU to abide by the requirements, Reutersreported. 

Ministry of Commerce spokesperson Gao Feng made the remarks at a regular briefing in Beijing.

Ljajic: WTO membership would be important step forward in EU accession

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade, Tourism and Telecommunications Rasim Ljajic spoke on Thursday with EU Delegation to Serbia head Sam Fabrizi.

Their conversation concerned "Serbia's membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the strengthening of regional economic cooperation," the Serbian government announced.

Serbia complains to EC about Croatia's measure

Croatia's introduction of non-tariff barriers is a drastic violation of the Stabilization and Association Agreement, says Serbia's trade and tourism minister.

For this reason, Rasim Ljajic explained on Tuesday, Serbia will as soon as today address the European Commission, and ask for the decision of Croatia, an EU member, to be reconsidered.
