The policies of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his finance minister at the time, Yanis Varoufakis, resulted in the imposition of capital controls in the summer of 2015. Greece found itself on the brink of default.

Exactly a month before the national elections, a Metron Analysis poll published Friday places the main opposition New Democracy (ND) 7.7 percentage points ahead of ruling SYRIZA.

Greek Finance Minister Euclid Tsakalotos has slammed ESM Managing Director Klaus Regling after the latter said that the tactics of former finance minister Yannis Varoufakis cost Greece 100 billion euros.
In an interview with Open TV late Thursday, Tsakalotos denounced Regling's allegations as groundless, adding that if he were his student, he would fail him.

Yanis Varoufakis, leader of the Democracy in Europe Movement 2025 (DiEM25), on Wednesday attacked Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras for suggesting during an interview with ERT state broadcaster Tuesday that his ex finance minister was ready to cooperate with his nemesis, ex German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble.

The reasons that led to ruling SYRIZA's big defeat in the European and local elections are numerous.

Even as SYRIZA confronted a New Democracy landslide in 2 June local election run-offs, a poll on voter intention in the 7 July general election had the ruling party trailing ND by nine percentage points, nearly the identical spread between the two top parties as in the 26 May European Parliament election.

Commenting on the losses suffered by leftist SYRIZA in Sunday's local and regional authority runoffs, former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis attributed it to "inconsistencies" in its stances.

"SYRIZA never had deep roots in local government. But it chiefly paid for the inconsistencies of the past four years," Varoufakis told Skai.

Main opposition New Democracy is 9 percentage points ahead of ruling SYRIZA, according to an opinion poll carried out by Pulse for broadcaster SKAI, published on Sunday.

The difference in the European Parliament election results concerning Greeks living abroad between conservative New Democracy and ruling SYRIZA was 18.61 percentage points in the former's favor, a final count has shown - double the difference in the domestic vote.

Former finance minister Yanis Varoufakis put on a brave face after marginally failing to secure a seat in the European Parliament with his Diem25 party.
