Moderate quake felt in Zakynthos

An earthquake with preliminary magnitude 4 struck οn the island of Zakynthos in western Greece on Monday.

The Athens Geodynamic Institute said the quake occurred at 14.35 p.m. local time, 10 kilometers southwest of Zakynthos town, at a depth of 14 kilometers.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injury from the quake.

Large cache of explosives found on Ionian island

A large amount of explosive material was found by the police on the island of Zakynthos on Friday in the village of Keri.

More specifically, 800 kilos of ammonium dynamite was found and confiscated. The material was stored in a small room in the basement of an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the village.

The signatories of the Bern Convention, the international legal instrument in the field of nature conservation, have decided to issue recommendations to Greece due to failure to comply with accords to protect the spawning area of the loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta) on the island of Zakynthos.
