İznik pottery

With a mission to promote the traditional art of handmade İznik tiles, which disappeared 400 years ago without a trace, the İznik Foundation has been making efforts to keep the art alive by producing these exceptional pieces of work in its workshop in İznik.

These tiles are produced with original recipes from 600 years ago with traditional production methods.

Two of the 223 500-year-old İznik tiles and a tile panel, stolen from the Ulu Mosque in the southern province of Adana during its restoration 19 years ago, have been found in the Netherlands.

As part of an extensive array of antiquities from India and the Islamic world, Bonhams has announced a fine and rare İznik pottery tile as one of the highlights of its upcoming sale to be held in London on Oct. 18. 

The secret of coralline and turquoise colors in ?znik?s famous tiles has yet to be discovered, but works have started on historical kilns aimed at researching their origin This year?s archaeological excavations have started in the 600-year-old kilns found in the town of ?znik in the northwestern province of Bursa.
