Former ombudsman Sasa Jankovic starts his presidential campaign

New Belgrade's Hala Sportova on Sunday hosted a gathering that marked the beginning of former Citizens' Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic's presidential campaign.

Those who showed up at the packed sports venue included the numerous public figures who previously signed an appeal to Jankovic to run, as well as officials from several opposition parties.

Serbia Ombudsman Resigns to Run for President

While most political parties in Serbia, including the ruling Progressives, have yet to name their candidates for April's presidential elections, Sasa Jankovic officially launched his presidential campaign on Tuesday.

"In the name of the citizens, I want to be the president of Serbia as the protector of all of us," Jankovic said.

Opposition New Party member and former Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Zivkovic told BIRN that prosecutors should launch an investigation into health minister Zlatibor Loncar over his alleged connections with the notorious Zemun Clan, whose members were found guilty of murdering Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic in 2003.

"Obvious that opposition won't go to elections united"

New Party (NS) leader and MP Zoran Zivkovic said on Thursday that it is "obvious" the opposition will not go to early elections "in a single column."

He said his party is ready to participate in the parliamentary election, yet to be called, either independently or "in some natural coalition, where we won't have to explain why we're a member ."
