Skopje calm after parliament violence leaves scores injured

Skopje was peaceful on Friday morning, a day after the police intervened when VMRO-DPMNE supporters stormed the parliament building, N1 is reporting.

After the clashes in the streets and in parliament on Thursday evening, the police are almost nowhere to be seen in the streets this morning, while only four tents remain in front of parliament.

Bulgaria Worried by Events in Macedonia

After the rioting in Macedonia when hundreds of people stormed parliament building and beat up MPs after an ethnic Albanian was elected parliamentary speaker, the situation in neighbouring Macedonia was discussed at a meeting in Sofia between Bulgarian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Stefan Yanev, Interior Minister Plamen Uzunov and heads of security structures, BNR reported.

Macedonia Shaken by Violence in Parliament

Police moved in to restore order late Thursday after protesters supporting the former ruling VMRO DPMNE party stormed parliament, injuring at least four MPs.

The protesters forced their way in to the legislature after the former opposition led by the Social Democrats, SDSM, elected a parliamentary speaker in a bid to form a government.

Macedonia Protesters Wield Cardboard Shields Against New Coalition

Supporters of the right-wing VMRO-DPMNE party which faces losing power after 11 years at the helm, took to the streets bearing cardboard shields, painted in the national colours, red and yellow, to display dislike for the Social Democratic Union of Macedonia (SDSM)-led coalition government.
