Independent candidate for president Tariceanu proposes national pact on demography
Independent candidate for Romania's president backed by the Liberal Reformist Party (PLR) Calin Popescu Tariceanu in Bacau on Tuesday said he would propose and support 'with perseverance' a national pact on demography, a topic he said it represented one of the 'three pillars' of his country project.
'A site I plan to open and work on as Romania's president is related to an issue few people are thinking about today, an issue, which, unfortunately, is not part of the current debates in the Romanian society. It is the issue, an issue, indeed, of demography. You will probably be surprised, but we must look to the future if we want to be responsible politicians. However, the future for Romania does not sound good in this respect. The projections and prognoses are pessimistic. There is a demographic decline all over the European Union, but in Romania this demographic decline is even steeper. My intention in this respect is that we draw up as soon as possible a national pact of demographic policies raising the issue of the birth rate, the life expectancy, which is currently extremely low in Romania, the lowest in Europe, unfortunately, but also of immigration and the labour force migration,' Tariceanu highlighted.
