Frontex joins in guarding of Greek-FYROM borders

Greeks will collaborate with European guards to manage their frontier with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) said Frontex, the EU border agency, on Thursday after a deal was brokered to address concerns over Athens’ commitment to control migration.

The deal came after other EU states piled pressure on Greece ot accept help for registering and documenting migrants trying to head north across the Balkans towards Germany and other states. Greece’s EU partners had wanted to seal the deal by the time EU interior ministers meet in Brussels on Friday to review the migration flows.

Frontex will hep register migrants at FYROM and deploy more personnel there next week. Greek officials confirmed this and said that Athens had not previously refused joint border guards. “Migrants at Greece’s northern border will be checked and those found not properly identified will be registered,” said Frontex Executive Director Fabrice Leggeri in a statement.
