Grenade Kills Two in Moldova Shop Blast

An explosion caused by a grenade going off in a shop in Moldova's capital Chisinau on Tuesday killed two people and wounded three.

Local police investigating the case said that the explosion, which happened at around noon, was an "accident".

The perpetrator, a man in his 50s who had a criminal record, is said to have argued with the shop keeper over his bill and dropped the grenade he had in his backpack.

The police are still investigating why the man was carrying a grenade.

The shop is located in central Chisinau, near several public institutions, the headquarters of Moldova's main opposition faction, the Action and Solidarity Party, and several embassies and the OSCE's Moldova office.
