One dead in apparent domestic homicide

Starše – A 47-year-old woman is suspected of murdering her husband, who died at the scene in the Starše municipality in north-eastern Slovenia on Friday. The suspect, who apparently stabbed the 48-year-old man during an argument, has been detained.

The police arrested the suspect on Friday on reasonable suspicion of murder. On Sunday afternoon, she was brought before an investigating judge for questioning. After the hearing, which lasted late into the night, the judge ordered for her to be put on remand, the Maribor Police Department said on Monday.

The investigation so far has revealed that the suspect stabbed her husband in the chest while having an argument with him. He was so seriously injured that he died at the scene of the crime, in a village near Maribor. The object with which the suspect committed the crime, reportedly a knife, was found at the scene. Prior to the crime, the police had never had to intervene because of the two.

According to several media reports, the victim was Aleš Tihec, a sports journalist who was the first editor of sports TV channel Sportklub Slovenija, a post he took up in 2007 and held for more than a decade. Previously, he worked for commercial broadcaster POP TV, reported N1 portal. Some media reports add that the motive for the murder is said to be jealousy.

The offence of murder is punishable by a prison sentence of 5-15 years.
