Thirty-eight migrants rescued south of Crete

Thirty-eight migrants were rescued off the southern coast of Crete on Thursday, the Coast Guard said.

The migrants, all men, were located by the crew of a Liberian-flagged cargo ship some 17.5 nautical miles south of the small island of Gavdos and then transported by a Coast Guard lifeboat to the Cretan port of Sfakia.

Cretan man arrested for selling church relics

A 52-year-old man was arrested in the town of Chania, northwestern Crete, on Wednesday when he tried to sell "relics of saints" to a police officer posing as a buyer. 

According to the police, the suspect presented to the officer seven containers and cases which contained a total of 17 bones, which, according to his claims, were relics of Saints of the Roman Catholic Church.

Greek demographics: An aging and over-the-hill population

Mainland Greece is aging alarmingly - faster than even the most dire predictions of demographers. One in three residents of the Prefectures of Arta and Evrytania is currently over 65 years old, a percentage that was expected in 2050, while in eleven prefectures of the country with a total population of 828,000 people one in four is elderly.

Citizens, businesses largely abiding by anti-smoking law

It was long in coming but widespread enforcement of the anti-smoking law now appears to be a reality in Greece.

The data collected jointly by the National Transparency Authority and Greek Police from inspections indicates that the overwhelming majority of citizens and businesses are complying with the law.
