Breast cancer screening program extended

More than 20,000 women, equivalent to the population of a city like Grevena in northern Greece or big Cycladic islands including Naxos and Syros, have been diagnosed with breast cancer at an early stage, with greater prospects of curing the disease, thanks to the national Fofi Gennimata initiative.

The breast cancer screening program began in June 2022 for women aged 50 to 69.

Farmer protests spread to northern Greece

Farmers in the northern prefectures of Kozani, Kastoria, and Grevena, have staged protests and drove tractors in convoys towards towns to highlight problems in their sector that they say "threaten the sustainability of agricultural and livestock production."

Issues related to the implementation of the new Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) are at the center of the farmers' concerns.

Fire breaks out in Grevena

The Hellenic Fire Service has responded to a fire near the town of Grevena in northern Greece on Wednesday. According to state broadcaster ERT, the blaze broke out in a wooded area near Kogiadika. There is no reported risk to nearby homes.

There are currently 65 firefighters, 14 vehicles, four helicopters and two aircraft on scene.

Two arrested for possession and sale of ancient religious icons

A 51-year-old man and a 44-year-old woman have been arrested near the town of Grevena in northern Greece for possessing two ancient religious icons, each listed for sale at 3,000 euros.

The arrests were made following an investigation conducted by the Edessa police department, resulting in their apprehension on Tuesday afternoon.

Grevena officials oppose ministry's refugee housing plan

The mayor and the deputy regional governor in the town and regional unit of Grevena, northern Greece, expressed their opposition to a government plan to house refugees and migrants in hotels in the mountainous parts of the region in the coming days, as part of ongoing efforts to relieve pressure on camps on the islands.
