Fredi Beleri, an ethnic Greek mayor-elect in Albania sentenced to two years in prison in March for vote-buying, is unlikely to be a candidate for the European Parliament with Greece's ruling party, New Democracy, in June's European Parliament election, Kathimerini understands. 

Greece's new Parliament was sworn in on Monday, following the general elections held on June 25. The ceremony took place in the presence of Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou.

Following the religious oath, Muslim members of Parliament swore on the Quran, while those who preferred to do so, took the political oath.

Greece's New Democracy party leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be sworn in as prime minister on Monday after a resounding victory in a repeat election on Sunday gave him a second four-year term.

Center-right New Democracy surged to a decisive victory in general elections on Sunday, paving the way for leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis to form a comfortable majority government this week. 

Just a few days before conservative New Democracy's planned submission in Parliament of a legislative amendment for the abolition of a planned reduction to the tax-free threshold, the Greek Communist Party (KKE) has tabled its own amendment.

Greek opposition leader has said he will respect the country's name deal with the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) if this is ratified by Parliament.

"I have made it clear that I do not like this agreement," Kyriakos Mitsotakis told Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper in an interview.

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis dismissed on Wednesday a threat against him posted on social media by anarchist group Rouvikonas, saying he is unfazed by the comment.
