420 migrants caught off Aegean in one week: Turkish Interior Ministry

A total of 420 illegal migrants were apprehended off Turkey's Aegean coast over the past week, Turkish Interior Ministry stated on Aug. 19. Between Aug. 11 and Aug. 18, Turkish Coast Guards intercepted 420 migrants in nine separate incidents off the Aegean Sea, the ministry said in a statement. It said one migrant smuggler was also detained during the operations.

Erdoğan to make three foreign visits in September

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is set to visit Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and New York in September. 

Erdoğan will meet Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev in Astana between Sept. 8 and 10. He will then travel to Azerbaijan on Sept. 10-11 where he will meet Azerbaijani President İlham Aliyev.

There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage, according to local officials.

Two earthquakes with magnitudes of over 4 shook the Gökova Bay off Turkey's Aegean coast on Aug. 18, the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) has stated.  
 
The first earthquake with a 4.2-magnitude hit the Gökova Bay at 3.47 p.m. at a depth of 7 kilometers, according to AFAD.

PM Yıldırım says Turkey not aching for Customs Union update

Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said on Aug. 18 that Ankara was not pushing for an update of the Customs Union amid an ongoing debate over recent remarks by German Chancellor Angela Merkel suggesting Berlin would not pursue an update of the agreement.
