Hungary’s OTP bank signs deal to acquire NKBM bank

Ljubljana – The Hungarian OTP Bank Group announced on Monday it had signed a contract to acquire the outright stake in NKBM, Slovenia’s second largest bank. The deal is expected to be finalised in the second quarter of next year as the acquirer is waiting approval from relevant regulatory authorities.

Air Montenegro to launch flights to Ljubljana in June

Ljubljana – Air Montenegro, Montenegro’s new flag carrier, will start operating scheduled flights between Tivat and Ljubljana on 29 June, the Serbian press agency Tanjug has reported, citing the Montenegrin public broadcaster RTCG.

Slovenia’s economy returns to growth in Q1

Ljubljana – After contracting by an estimated 5.5% in real terms last year, Slovenia’s economy returned to growth in the first quarter of the year as GDP expanded at an annual rate of 1.6% in real terms or by as much as 2.3% when adjusted for season. It rose by 1.4% from the final quarter of 2020, data from the Statistics Office show.

Vaccination of children could start soon

Ljubljana – The head of the national advisory group for Covid-19 vaccination, Bojana Beović, has said that following the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) approval of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine for children aged 12 or more, the group will recommend vaccinating children, especially children suffering from chronic diseases.

Phones and laptops now key channels for media consumption

Ljubljana – Smartphones and laptops have become the key channels for consuming media content. That is the main finding of the latest media consumption survey, conducted by the pollsters Valicon and Iprom in February and March. Slovenians consume media content, especially news media, to a significantly greater degree than in 2018.

Canada: Bodies at Indigenous school not isolated incident

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on May 31 it's not an isolated incident that over 200 children were found buried at a former Indigenous residential school.

Trudeau's comments come as Indigenous leaders are calling for an examination of every former residential school site, institutions that held children taken from families across the nation.

New data in Peru show COVID-19 death toll is over 180,000

Peru on May 31 announced a sharp increase in its COVID-19 death toll, saying there have been more than 180,000 fatalities since the pandemic hit the country early last year.

The announcement was made in the presidential palace during the presentation of a report by a working group commissioned to analyze and update the death toll.
