The Greek government on Wednesday denounced an attack against a journalist by a ship owner during a football match in Athens.

Giorgos Papachristos, an opinion writer and adviser at the daily Ta Nea, was attacked on Tuesday evening after the end of the first half of the football match between Panathinaikos and Braga, in front of dozens of spectators.

With Attica ICUs on the brink in a COVID-19 surge, Health Minister Vasilis Kikilias in a televised press conference issued a call to private doctors to join with the public health system in battling the epidemic.

He said doctors will receive 2,000 euros monthly pay plus overtime (shifts)

"We must all back the National Health System in the battle we are waging," he declared.

Six people were injured in a brawl that broke out in the early hours of Monday in Gerakas, eastern Attica, between a group of Greeks and a group of Albanians. 

Police are investigating whether the altercation could have been triggered by a shootout between police and an ethnic Greek in southern Albania on Sunday night that resulted in the llatter's death.

Police have launched a murder investigation after a 47-year-old man was shot dead in Glyka Nera, northeast of Athens.

The incident occurred around 8.15 a.m. on Wednesday shortly after the victim dropped his child off at primary school. The 47-year-old was inside his car when two suspects approached him and fired at least eight shots before taking off.

A police officer accidentally shot himself in the stomach area when his service revolver went off while on duty at Athens International Airport on Thursday.

According to initial reports, the accident occurred while he was in his office. He was rushed to the Sismanogleio hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Health Minister Makis Voridis on Monday ordered an investigation into how a male nurse, who is a father of two, died at a psychiatric hostel for minors in Pallini, northeast of Athens, following a violent brawl between two patients over the weekend.
