Alexis Georgoulis

European Parliament scandals with a Greek twist

Since the last European elections in 2019, 163 complaints have been lodged against MEPs for workplace harassment, fraud, nepotism, financing and, even espionage for Russia, according to Belgian newspaper La Libre in February.

Of the 21 Greek MEPs, at least five have dealt with the justice system and were investigated for criminal and non-criminal offenses.

European Parliament to examine request to lift Georgoulis’ immunity

The request for the the lifting of the immunity of former SYRIZA MEP Alexis Georgoulis, who has been accused of rape and sexual abuse, will be examined during an extraordinary meeting of the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) next Tuesday, May 23.

At the same extraordinary JURI meeting, the request for waiver of immunity of MEP Maria Spyraki will also be examined.

Just before we cast the vote

When the pre-election period kicks off with the case of the alleged sexual abuse of a woman by SYRIZA MEP Alexis Georgoulis, nothing bodes well for the path towards the ballot box, and toxicity abounds. As the foul-smelling case of alleged criminal acts takes center stage in the political agenda, the confrontation is bound to ignite each side's baser instincts.

Rapporteur to be appointed for Georgoulis waiver

A rapporteur will be appointed on May 8 to request the waiving of the immunity of SYRIZA MEP Alexis Georgoulis, who has been accused of rape and sexual abuse.

According to Skai TV's Brussels correspondent, Georgoulis' lawyers have yet to receive the case file because this can only be done after his immunity is lifted.

Ten things we should never forget about rape

The case of Alexis Georgoulis, a member of the European Parliament for SYRIZA who resigned after an investigation into alleged sexual abuse, brought back familiar stereotypes about rape, which many of us hoped had been put to rest by now. But since repetition is the only way to deconstruct these cliches and disconnected inferences, let's clarify some points again:

Belgium did not ‘delay’ in MEP’s case, lawyer says

The lawyer representing a woman who has accused SYRIZA MEP Alexis Georgoulis of rape pushed back on Wednesday against claims that Belgian justice authorities had been slow off the mark in their response to the case.

The original complaint by Eleni Chronopoulou was submitted in 2020, accusing Georgoulis of rape and causing bodily harm.
