European Parliament scandals with a Greek twist

Since the last European elections in 2019, 163 complaints have been lodged against MEPs for workplace harassment, fraud, nepotism, financing and, even espionage for Russia, according to Belgian newspaper La Libre in February.

Of the 21 Greek MEPs, at least five have dealt with the justice system and were investigated for criminal and non-criminal offenses.

EPPO drops charges against MEP Maria Spyraki in fraud case

The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) has decided to dismiss its proceedings against Greek MEP Maria Spyraki, in a case of suspected fraud in relation to the management of the parliamentary allowance, and in particular concerning the remuneration of Accredited Parliamentary Assistants.

European Parliament to examine request to lift Georgoulis’ immunity

The request for the the lifting of the immunity of former SYRIZA MEP Alexis Georgoulis, who has been accused of rape and sexual abuse, will be examined during an extraordinary meeting of the European Parliament's Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) next Tuesday, May 23. 

At the same extraordinary JURI meeting, the request for waiver of immunity of MEP Maria Spyraki will also be examined. 

Way paved to strip MEPs Kaili, Spyraki of immunity

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola is expected to announce the launch on Wednesday of the procedure for the waiver of the immunity of Greek MEPs Eva Kaili and Maria Spyraki. 

The announcement during a Plenary of the European Parliament on Wednesday follows a request by the European Public Prosecutor's Office.

New Democracy rejects PM’s call for televised debate on European Parliament election

Main opposition New Democracy has rejected PM Alexis Tsipras' challenge to Kyriakos Mitsotakis to hold a televised debate before the European Parliament election on 26 May.

Tsipras first threw down the gauntlet in Parliament and today SYRIZA spokesperson Rania Svigou reissued the invitation in a letter to New DemocΓεια σου, ggilsonracy spokesperson Maria Zacharaki.

ND wants answers over 'mystery flight' to Athens

New Democracy said on Tuesday it wants answers from the government with regard to reports of a "mystery flight" by a Venezuelan government airplane to Athens International Airport on Saturday.
According to a report by Skai TV, the airplane remained in Athens for four hours before flying off and Venezuela's Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza was on board.
