When Tina Kyriaki saw Marina Satti's video for Greece's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time, it made her mad. Very mad, in fact. "My first thought was that we were gouging out our own eyes," the founder of Alternative Athens tells Kathimerini, quoting a Greek proverb.

What are the adjectives that should describe every new creative interpretation of ancient Greek culture? Must it be "simple yet elegant," "abstract" or "figurative"? Can it be "fresh"? Can it be "contemporary"?

And what are the appropriate adjectives for an esthetic proposal that is based on a completely different creative approach?

British choreographer Russell Maliphant, Greek composer Vangelis and London-based Greek fashion designer Mary Katrantzou joined their formidable forces in "The Thread," a production inspired by the story of Ariadne which marries the two seemingly incongruous worlds of Greek mythology and contemporary dance.

Specializing in folk, ballet and contemporary dance, 18 dancers will be performing "The Thread," a production directed and choreographed by Russell Maliphant, at the 4th century BC Ancient Theater of Epidaurus on August 24.

It was a question over which debate had been growing: What would the first issue of Vogue Greece have on its cover? The answer came in the form of two covers at a festive and occasionally emotional soiree last Saturday hosted by publisher Kathimerini at the perennially popular Zonars cafe-restaurant, on the corner of downtown Panepistimiou and Voukourestiou streets in the center of Athens.

The Fall 2019 season started off the season with a weekend-long event. Catwalk shows, designer shopping and talks from the experts in the fashion industry. This season was stylish yet modern and wasn't short of heart stopping moments. Vivienne Westwood used the catwalk to deliver a message about climate change. Molly Goddard's hot pink dress had everyone aflutter!

“It’s funny, I never wanted to use classical Greek art, because being from there, it seemed too obvious,” she said after her show to Vogue. “But this time, I thought, ‘Why not?’”
And with the “Why not?” Mary Katrantzou has presented one of her boldest collections featuring  hints of her Greek heritage and roots.

Ancient Greek themes, including elements from the Minoan civilization, served as inspiration for Mary Katrantzou's spring-summer 2017 collection, shown during London Fashion Week on Sunday. The Greek-born, London-based designer is known for her signature digital prints.
