In a bleak outlook, Admiral Rob Bauer, who chairs the bloc's Military Committee, said people should get ready for conscription within the next two decades. He said it is "not a given" that member states are at peace, as he praised Sweden for preparing its citizens for war.

However, ahead of the NATO Summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, which begins on July 11, where confronting Russia will be high on the agenda, Sir Richard Shirreff, the former Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Europe, said NATO was not ready for war with Moscow.

The goal is better preparedness of the Alliance for an attack and improved logistics.
For the first time since the Cold War, plans are being updated on how to respond in the event of a Russian attack.

American soldiers will be deployed in Bulgaria as part of NATO's plans for deterrence and the defense of the eastern flank. This was reported by the Twitter account of the US mission to NATO.

The announcement does not make it clear what part of the 2,400 soldiers from the US 101st Airborne Division will remain in Bulgaria. The rest will be located in Romania, Hungary and Slovakia.

Romania's Chief of Defence Staff (CoD) Daniel Petrescu is paying an official visit to the Netherlands March 3-4. According to a press statement the National Defence Ministry (MApN) sent to AGERPRES, Petrescu is scheduled to meet Dutch Chief of Defence Rob Bauer to discuss bilateral co-operation inside NATO and the EU.
