The passing away of Turkey?s 9th president Süleyman Demirel marks the end of an era in Turkish politics. Demirel was the last of those politicians who made their way up through the close-circuit of Turkey?s fledgling parliamentary system, amid the pains of transition from a rural to an urban society and as macro politics was dominated by the Cold War.

President Erdo?an and former President Gül hold surprise meeting in parliament
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an and former President Abdullah Gül held a surprise meeting in parliament on June 19, the first such meeting since the June 7 general election.

Demirel's body was taken from his house on Güniz Street, located in the Tunal? neighborhood of Ankara, at 8 a.m. on June 19, and brought to the Turkish parliament for the state ceremony that was held between 9-9:45 a.m.

The meaning of 60 percent
"Sixty percent" is very important. It should never be underestimated. Former Turkish Prime Minister and President Süleyman Demirel, who passed away at the age of 90 early on June 17, will be laid to rest in his hometown of ?slamköy in Turkey's south after a state ceremony in the capital on June 19.
