The passing away of Turkey?s 9th president Süleyman Demirel marks the end of an era in Turkish politics. Demirel was the last of those politicians who made their way up through the close-circuit of Turkey?s fledgling parliamentary system, amid the pains of transition from a rural to an urban society and as macro politics was dominated by the Cold War.

President Erdo?an and former President Gül hold surprise meeting in parliament

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdo?an and former President Abdullah Gül held a surprise meeting in parliament on June 19, the first such meeting since the June 7 general election.

Erdo?an and Gül met in the office of Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek for around an hour.

Ankara bids farewell to former President Demirel in official ceremony

A state funeral was held in Ankara for former Turkish President and seven-time Prime Minister Süleyman Demirel, who died aged 90 on June 17.

Demirel's body was taken from his house on Güniz Street, located in the Tunal? neighborhood of Ankara, at 8 a.m. on June 19, and brought to the Turkish parliament for the state ceremony that was held between 9-9:45 a.m.

The meaning of 60 percent

"Sixty percent" is very important. It should never be underestimated. After an election campaign in which the president, the prime minister, the cabinet ministers, governors, district governors, pro-government media, state airplanes, state helicopters and even the Directorate of Religious Affairs (Diyanet) were mobilized to form a "one-man regime," 60 percent of the electorate said "No."

Do?an Holding president praises Demirel's stance on press freedom

Süleyman Demirel, Turkey?s ninth president who passed away early June 17, never used the state?s power against free press, Do?an Holding Honorary President Ayd?n Do?an has said to private broadcaster CNN Türk.

?He [Demirel] was a person who had well digested the concept of democracy and he was tolerant with criticism,? Do?an said. ?We have lost a worthy politician.?
