Animal rights groups decry conditions at Aegina sanctuary

Inspections conducted by animal rights groups and the Environment Ministry have shed light on deteriorating standards at the Greek Center for the Protection of Wildlife (EKPAZ) on the Saronic island of Aegina, where dozens of animals and birds, some of them endangered species, are languishing in dismal conditions.

Ferry rams into port of Agistri, five injured

A Greek passenger ferry carrying 198 people onboard crashed into the port of Agistri, in the Saronic Gulf on Friday, injuring lightly five people, the coast guard said.

"Achaeos", which serves the Aegina-Piraeus route, was trying to dock when the collision happened. The passengers who suffered minor injuries were transferred to Aegina.

A rosy pelican and two Dalmatian pelicans - both of which are endangered species - were returned to their natural habitat after receiving treatment for injuries and being tagged with a tracking device.
