Air traffic controllers to walk off the job on April 9 after colleague’s death

Greek air traffic controllers will hold a work stoppage from 8 a.m. to noon on April 9 to protest inadequate staffing following the death of a colleague while on duty at the Thessaloniki's International Airport last Monday.

During the strike, no flights will depart from or land in Greek airports.

Albania Reopens Airport After Authorities Detain Protesters

Albanian Minister of Transportation and Energy, Belinda Balluku, on Friday said the situation at Albania's main airport was returning to "normality" after a work stoppage by air traffic controllers over pay brought operations grinding to a halt.

"Starting from 9am today, operations at Rinas airport in Albanian airspace are going back to normality," Balluku wrote on Facebook.

Airports unprepared for massive growth in air traffic

Pressured by the explosive growth of passenger numbers generated by Greece's expanding tourism market, officials are calling for additional air traffic controllers to ensure safe travel.

In 2014, the Greece's Civil Aviation Authority (YPA) was asked to hire an additional 70 air traffic controllers.

Greek air traffic controllers said on Monday that they will take part in Thursday’s general strike, which is likely to lead to disruption at the country’s airports.

The strike has been called by Greece’s main private sector union, GSEE, and public sector group ADEDY. Greek media are set to strike a day earlier to ensure that the rally on Thursday is covered.
