Culture Ministry dismisses calls for protection of two iconic Athens cinemas
The Ideal and Astor cinemas in downtown Athens cannot be regarded as historic cultural monuments, the Ministry of Culture said in an announcement on Thursday.

University occupations spreading around country
Students and pupils are expressing anger over the train collision in Tempe, northern Greece on February 28 with occupations and mobilizations at universities nationwide.
In Athens, occupations are form around the emblematic university buildings in the city center by student groups.

The 24-hour strike by Greece's largest private and public sector unions is also expected to close public services and state schools and disrupt city transport.
It is the latest in a series of protests following a head-on collision between a passenger and freight train in the central Greek region of Tempe. There were more than 350 people in the passenger train, mostly students.

The Athenian version of Open House, an event that first started in London in 1992 to promote appreciation of architecture by the general public, will see a selection of public and private buildings that represent distinct styles and trends spanning different centuries opening their doors to anyone who would like to look around inside.

Students from art and music schools gathered on Friday noon at Syntagma Square in Athens for a protest concert over the failings that led to the train accident at Tempe, northern Greece.

Free Athens-Thessaloniki flights for students
Greek airline Sky Express is offering free flights to students traveling between Athens and Thessaloniki.
The offer started on Friday and will run until March 31.
The initiative has been launched in collaboration with Texan Environmental Management SA in the wake of Greece's rail collision on February 28 which killed 57 people, including a large number of university students.
