The Turkish Lira firmed to 4.66 against the dollar on May 28 as investors weighed up comments by Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Şimşek and Central Bank Governor Murat Çetinkaya after last week's emergency 300 basis point interest rate hike.

The Central Bank of Turkey may carry out additional monetary tightening "if necessary" as it closely monitors the impact of the latest developments on inflation, pricing behavior and other factors affecting inflation, the bank's Governor Murat Çetinkaya has said.

The Central Bank’s main goal this year is to increase the effectiveness of its monetary policy and rein in double-digit inflation, Governor Murat Çetinkaya told Reuters in an interview on Jan. 25.

The Turkish Central Bank raised its end-2017 inflation forecast to 8.7 percent on Aug. 1 from a previous 8.5 percent, citing double-digit increases in food prices.
