Prosecutors in South Korea have arrested the CEO of the company that owned the ferry that sank off South Korea, killing more than 260 people.

Kim Han-sik, chief executive officer of Cheonghaejin Marine Company, was arrested on Thursday. He faces charges of causing death by negligence and violating maritime law, according to reports of CNN.

The death toll from the South Korean Sewol ferry disaster has climbed to 242, according to local officials.

According to the South Korean coast guard, as cited by the CNN, 60 people are still missing.

The search-and-rescue operation is impeded by swift currents and high waves.

The death toll from the sunken South Korean ferry has rose to 108 on the sixth day of the search operations.

Dozens of bodies were retrieved over the last two days, but 190 remain missing, Euronews reported. Many of the victims were children, travelling on a school trip to the resort island Jeju.

Passenger ferries were docked at ports in Greece on Monday due to the start of a 48-hour strike called by the Panhellenic Seamen's Federation (PNO).

The sailors are protesting that the multi-bill passed through Parliament on Sunday allows ferry companies to offer employees in-house contracts, thereby bypassing collective bargaining with the union.
