Attica police said on Wednesday that they have broken up a wide-reaching drug distribution network and made eight arrests.

The eight suspects - five Albanian nationals and three Greeks - were arrested in a police operation that spread across the city. Reports said the leader of the gang was a 35-year-old Albanian man.

Police have arrested 21 members of a criminal gang involved in drug dealing and theft around the Exarchia district in central Athens, according to early reports Friday.

A police statement was expected later in the day.

The members of a drug gang detained in a recent operation had been working for a group covered by state insurance, according to police sources.
