Europe Day celebrations in Cyprus mark 20 years in EU

Events celebrating Europe Day and the 20th anniversary of Cyprus' accession to the EU are being organized this week by the European Parliament Office in Cyprus and the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, with the participation in two of them, of the Cypriot president Nikos Christodoulides, and the European Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, Stella Kyriakides.

Von der Leyen to unveil aid for Lebanon to stop refugee flows, says Cyprus

The European Union will offer economic aid to Lebanon when the European Commission and Cypriot presidents jointly visit Beirut on Thursday, a Cypriot official has said.

Cyprus has grown increasingly concerned at a sharp increase in the number of Syrian refugees making their way to the island. Lebanon, a mere 185 km away from Cyprus, hosts hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees.

Cyprus appoints banker Patsalides as Central Bank governor

Career banker Christodoulos Patsalides was appointed governor of the Central Bank of Cyprus on Monday for a five-year term, the island's presidency said.

Patsalides, who will represent Cyprus on the rate-setting Governing Council of the ECB, takes up his duties on April 11, replacing Constantinos Herodotou.

Cyprus calls for EU help amid migration crisis

Migration is top of the agenda this week in Cyprus, with President Nikos Christodoulides calling for the EU to step in to help Cyprus deal with a surge in arrivals on its shores. Cyprus is pressing Brussels to designate parts of Syria as safe for returns of migrants, and also to condition EU aid to Lebanon on its preventing migrants from departing.
