Switzerland–European Union relations

Slovenia has opened a consulate in Naples, south Italy, to promote the development of economic, cultural and science relations between the two neighbouring countries.

The new consulate, headed by Jacopo Fronzoni as honorary consul, was launched on 13 January, the Foreign Ministry announced on Twitter.

Swiss President Ignazio Cassis called on Feb. 6 for "calm and creativity" to fix Switzerland's thorny relations with the European Union.

Ties between Brussels and Bern have been strained since non-EU member Switzerland suddenly decided in May 2021 to end years of discussion towards a broad cooperation agreement with the bloc.

From 1 June 2019, the citizens of Bulgaria and Romania will have full freedom of movement, employment and establishment in Switzerland. Thus, they will have the same rights as other EU citizens (except Croatia) and will be able to reside freely in the country provided they have a job, the Press Center Directorate of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.

Switzerland's government says it will temporarily limit the number of workers from European Union member states Bulgaria and Romania who can access Swiss jobs, after an influx from the countries in recent months, according to The Washington Post, quoted by Focus  News Agency.
