Bulgaria has stirred controversy by casting a dissenting vote against a resolution proposed in the UN Human Rights Council, which sought to impose a ban on arms sales to Israel in light of the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip. The decision, reported by BNR "Horizon," has drawn criticism and raised questions about Bulgaria's stance on the matter.

Greece's candidacies as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council (2025-26) and as member of the Human Rights Council (2028-2030) will focus on close collaboration with all countries and UN mechanisms to safeguard human rights, Foreign Minister George Gerapatritis said during his address at the 55th UN Human Rights Council session in Geneva on Wednesday.

On the sidelines of the summit, Gerapatritis will engage in meetings with the UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, and the Executive Vice President of the World Jewish Council Maram Stern.

Bulgaria's candidacy for membership of the UN Human Rights Council in the period 2024-2026 was presented today by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mariya Gabriel.

A career member of the US Foreign Service, Jerrier (Jerry) Ismail, has been appointed the new US consul general in Thessaloniki.

He said that there were no consultations of all member states, and such an approach will only worsen the discord within the Council.
He estimated that such an approach would only deepen the rift between the member states, increase the contradictions between the parties and add fuel to the fire, RIA Novosti reports.

The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution terminating Russia's participation in the Human Rights Council.

"The UN General Assembly has suspended Russia's participation in the UN Human Rights Council," the statement said.

93 delegations voted in favor of the resolution, 24 against and 58 abstentions.

Geneva – Slovenia, in its capacity as the presiding country of the Council of the EU, requested a special session of the UN Human Rights Council on the situation in Ethiopia on Monday. More than 50 countries supported the call, Slovenia’s Permanent Mission to the UN Office in Geneva announced on Twitter.
