Jeremic moves up to second in race to become new UN secretary general

NEW YORK - Former Serbian FM Vuk Jeremic, Belgrade's candidate for the new UN secretary general, has moved up to second place after the fifth round of the vote on Monday, with former Portuguese PM Antonio Guterres still in pole position.

Guterres received 12 encourage, 2 discourage and one no opinion votes, while Jeremic had eight encourage, six discourage and one no opinion votes.

Slovak FM Miroslav Lajcak picked up eight encourage, seven discourage and zero no opinion votes, with Argentine FM Susana Malcorra receiving seven encourage, seven discourage and one no opinion votes.

Guterres also finished first in the previous round on September 9, when Jeremic achieved his best result up to that point, claiming the third place with two more encourage votes than before.
