NATO formally invites Macedonia to begin membership talks

NATO on Wednesday invited Macedonia to begin membership talks, Tanjug reported, citing the AP.

The alliance said that Macedonia can join once its name dispute with Greece is resolved.

NATO leaders have formally invited Macedonia while cautioning that it the move cannot be completed until the name issue is resolved, the agency said.

The report noted that the invitation was formalized in a communique at the NATO summit, paving the way for Macedonia to become the organization's 30th member - "and a plan that has run afoul of a wary Russia."
