Busy Romanian Book Fair Masks Decay in Reading

The ninth Bookfest, the most important book fair in Romania, opened on Thursday and will stay open until June 1.

Under the slogan “Quo Vadis, Poland To the next Nobel?” this year's fair will have a Polish flavour, with a series of events promoting Polish literature in Romania. Danuta Walesa, the wife of former Polish leader Lech Walesa, is among this year’s guests.

International conference on WWI starts Friday in Belgrade

BELGRADE - A two-day international conference on World War I, organized by the Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development (CIRSD) will start in Belgrade on Friday.

CIRSD president Vuk Jeremic told Tanjug that the participants will focus on the geopolitical situation in the world in 1914 and the events leading to the outbreak of the Great War.

Europe vote and Turkey

Although it was not given much attention in Turkey, with the latest Lisbon Treaty, the European Parliament has gained prominence in European politics and thus the winners and losers of the last weekend’s elections indeed will have an impact on the climate between Turkey and Europe as well.

Over 18 million voters are expected on Sunday to the polls to designate the 32 representatives of Romania in the European Parliament. The election campaign will end on Saturday at 7:00 a.m., and voters can go the polls on Sunday, from 7:00 a.m. until 09:00 p.m.

Greece approves Enel bid to search for oil and gas

Greece on Wednesday approved a request by Italian energy major Enel to search for oil and natural gas in three onshore areas in the west of the country.

Other oil firms will now be invited to submit rival exploration offers for the same three blocks later this year, in line with Greece’s “open-door” hydrocarbons licensing rules.

Bulgarian Household Electricity Bills Lowest in EU

Bulgarian households had the lowest electricity bills in the European Union in the second half of 2013, Eurostat data has revealed.

A family in Bulgaria pays EUR 8.8 per kWh of energy on the average, compared to EUR 20.1 for the EU as a whole.

Romania (EUR 12.8) and Hungary (EUR 13.3) rank second and third, according to the European statistical agency.
