Police in Thessaloniki issued a ban on public gatherings on Tuesday amid concerns about a rally that was being planned to protest a screening at the northern port city's annual documentary festival.
According to reports, a rally was being planned at 7 p.m. outside the festival's flagship Olympion cinema on downtown Aristotelous Square.

9 jailed pending trial over allegedly harassing, threatening 2 transgender persons in Thessaloniki
Nine people jailed in Greece will be tried Monday over accusations they harassed and threatened two 21-year-old transgender persons in the northern city of Thessaloniki.
The nine were remanded after appearing before a prosecutor Sunday. Twelve other people, all minors, were released provisionally pending trial on the same charges before a juvenile court.
Bill establishing minimum corporate taxation submitted to Parliament
The Economy and Finance Ministry has submitted to Parliament a draft taxation bill that foresees the establishment of a minimum tax rate of 15% for large multinational companies as well as large Greek groups.
The bill belatedly transposes a relevant European Union directive, that entered into force on January 1, into Greek legislation.
Central Athens street clashes injure 16
A student rally against an education bill that was ratified in Parliament on Friday was marred by clashes with police.
Seven police officers and nine civilians were injured.
The clashes erupted after student associations from all over Greece gathered at Athens University's Propylaea in the city center and marched to Parliament.
