This year's annual Open Day at the Onassis Cultural Center is dedicated to the events and zeitgeist of May 1968, with singers, musicians, actors and performers tracing the cross-fertilization between avant-garde art and new social and cultural ideas of the period, beginning at the end of the 50s up to the first years of the 70s.

Choreographer Christos Papadopoulos, hailed as a rising star in Europe, presents his minimalistic and poetic "Ion" at the Onassis Cultural Center. Focused on micro-movements, the piece is inspired by the flight of birds and fireflies, as the choreographer explores the mechanics of coordination and tests the audience's power of observation.

Jeanette | Athens | January 22

The Onassis Cultural Center is screening the film ranked first by the Cahiers du Cinema among its top 10 for 2017: Bruno Dumont's "Jeannette, l'enfance de Jeanne d'Arc," a musical on the childhood years of a girl who would go on to become a symbol of heroism and a Roman Catholic saint.

Akram Khan | Athens | February 21-27

Choreographer Akram Khan is renowned for marrying South Asian Kathak moves to the esthetic of contemporary dance, bridging his British upbringing with his Pakistani cultural background. His new piece, "Xenos" (Stranger/Other), which sees the acclaimed artist alone on stage with five distinguished musicians, will be premiering at Athens's Onassis Cultural Center on February 21-27.

Ioanna Portolou & Griffon | Athens | January 15-18

Acclaimed choreographer and dancer Ioanna Portolou explores the element of risk in the quest for true happiness in her new production for the Griffon dance company. The show, titled "Risk" and on at the Onassis Cultural Center January 15-18, sees five performers succumbing to the carefree abandon of 1980s music as they explore the consequences of setting the fear of injury aside.

Animation | Athens | To January 5

The Onassis Cultural Center is screening a selection of the top films that were shown in September at the Animasyros animated film festival on the island of Syros. Screenings run through Friday, January 5, at the venue's main stage starting at 6 p.m. and are suitable for the entire family. Admission is free on a first-come, first-served basis.
