Samsung regains position as top smartphone seller

Samsung regained its position as the top smartphone seller, wresting back the lead from Apple as Chinese rivals close the gap on both market leaders, industry tracker International Data Corporation (IDC) has reported.

Samsung overtook Apple as worldwide smartphone shipments grew nearly 8 percent in the first quarter of this year to 289.4 million, IDC said.

Apple ends Samsung's 12-year run as world's top smartphone seller

Apple's iPhone for the first time became the world's biggest selling smartphone after rival Samsung's 12-year run as leader, data have showed.

According to data from the International Data Corporation (IDC) released on Jan. 16, the iPhone stole Samsung's crown in 2023 with 234.6 million units sold, compared to the South Korean firm's 226.6 million units.

Google fined $162 mn by Indian watchdog over market dominance 

Google has been fined more than $160 million by India's anti-trust watchdog after a probe found the tech behemoth was abusing its commanding position in the local smartphone market.

The company's Android mobile operating system is by far the dominant player in India and is run on 95 percent of all the country's smartphones.    

Smartphones gaining ground in Greece

Greeks spent over 4.6 billion hours scrolling on their smartphones last year, according to a survey by cellphone data analysis company App Annie.

That amount, which reveals just how much smartphones have become a part of everyday life, is actually estimated to be even bigger as the figures by the US company do not include the data used by the iOS appliances - i.e. iPhones.
