Large blaze breaks out in Gythio supermarket
Firefighters in the town of Gythio in the southeastern Peloponnese on Tuesday were struggling to contain a large fire at a supermarket.
The blaze in the Ermou Street store started in the basement area, where the business keeps flammable material and refrigerators.
Thirty firefighters with 10 trucks were battling to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby buildings.

Ermou street in the centre of Athens is the 25th spot of the most expensive shopping streets in the world, according to an annual released by Cushman & Wakefield, an international property consultancy company. According to the data, it costs 2,340 euros per Sq/m to rent on Ermou St, which despite the financial crisis jumped two spots in the list from 2015. Ermou St.
Ermou wooing shoppers and international chains once more
Ermou Street appears to be staging a comeback as the main attraction for shoppers in central Athens, with chains such as Funky Buddha, American Eagle, Tezenis, H&M, Moytzi, Pandora, Lynne and Folli-Follie opening stores there.
In January a new Goody's Burger House will open on nearby Filellinon Street, while American firm Forever 21 is about to open its first store on Ermou.
Week of mid-season sales starts on Wednesday
Greek retailers will be starting their mid-season sales on Wednesday, one day later than usual due to the transfer of the Labor Day holiday from Sunday to Tuesday.
The sales will last for one week and retailers hope business to pick up after a sluggish performance in the run-up to the Easter break.

Swiss photographer Fred Boissonnas was the first photographer who traveled so much in Greece for more than three decades taking pictures of Greek landscape and people in 1900-1930.
He traveled all over Greece, from Athens to Crete and Kalavryta to Epirus.
5th annual Athens semi-marathon starts Sunday, March 20
Over 18,000 runners will take part in this year’s 5th annual Athens semi-marathon to take place on Sunday, March 20. Professionals, amateurs, locals and foreigners are expected to all take to the streets of Athens to test their endurance in long distance running. The race will kick off at the ‘Tomb of the Unknown Soldier’ on Amalias Avenue at 9 am on the morning Sunday, March 20.

Ermou Street was inundated with crowds on the last Sunday of the year, a shopping day thanks to the extended shop opening times on December 27. Athenians took advantage of the extended shopping hours that run to 6 p.m. though some department stores close at 8 p.m.
Shop owners found work satisfactory as people rushed for some last-minute shopping.
