Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse

As 2023 draws to a close, no one is sounding the death knell of the superhero movie. The Walt Disney Co.'s "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3" made $845.6 million worldwide and Sony's "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" ($691 million) was one of the most acclaimed films of the year. Marvel is still mightier than any other brand in the business.

The latest - and likely last - installment in the popular "Indiana Jones" franchise lassoed the competition at the North American box office, industry estimates showed on July 2, but analysts noted the weak debut for the fan favorite.

Warner Bros.' "The Flash" sprinted to the top of North American box offices in its opening weekend, in a Friday-to-Sunday run dominated by spin-offs and sequels.

But the live-action take on the DC Comics superhero only brought in $55.1 million, according to figures released Sunday by Exhibitor Relations - earnings that analysts said were "far below estimates" for its debut.

It was Miles Morales and the Spider-Verse versus the "Transformers" at the box office this weekend and the bots came out on top.

Tom Holland might be without his Spider-Man suit in "Uncharted," but his latest action-adventure is still doing good business at the North American box office.
